First training session for the Elk Mountain Grand Traverse.  Ruth, Neal, and I skied a nice loop on Sunday, January 8th.  It went from the Hunter Creek parking lot (by the water tank) past the McNamara Hut on the trail toward Margy's, and followed Woody Creek down to the turn at Spruce Creek.  Instead of turning up toward Margy's Hut we continued down Woody Creek to Lenado and then followed the Tinpot trail up to Four Corners.  From there we dropped back onto the Jeep road leading back down into Hunter Creek and back to the car.  The loop was seventeen or eighteen miles and had about 5200 feet of elevation gain, a perfect early season outing.  Most of the trail was broken although we did ski a few miles of new snow over an old track.  Between us we used lightweight track gear or light metal edged skis.  We did carry light packs but included full repair kits and such in case our light gear blew up.  The loop can be lengthened by including the climb up to Margy's via Spruce Creek and Sawmill Park while descending back to Lenado via Larkspur Road and Silver Creek.  We like it because the loop is close to home and usually has a track after a few day of clear weather (thank you hutsters!).  By the time we finished up the weather had turned from a 20% chance of precip to a 100% full blown blizzard!
