I enticed
my father to join me on
a hike to Cathedral Lake
by telling him I'd be
testing out some of the
latest GPS devices. |

We set
off around 8 a.m. and
drove up Castle Creek
Road to the Cathedral
trailhead armed with
turkey sandwiches and
his scruffy dog, Emmy. |

The hike
itself had some good
elevation gain and we
lucked out with great
weather. There
were a fair number of
people on the trail, but
that was okay because it
just made it easier for
us to find someone to
take our picture
together. |

We
reached the lake in a
few hours, and while
taking in the view I
gave my dad his first
Nectar Clif Bar which he
enjoyed so much I think
I can get away with just
giving him a box of them
for his birthday. |

The hike
back took us
considerably less time
and the GPSs worked
great, as long as I
didn't bury them in my
pocket where they
couldn't locate a
signal. I think
the winning function on
most all of those
devices is the ability
to retrace your route
back to your starting
point. So if the
Clif Bars don't work
out, I guess I'll have
to buy him a GPS. |
