Back in
February, my best friend
told me that I was not
only his best man,
but that it was my
responsibility to plan a
bachelor's party surf
trip. No pressure
at all I thought, I was
born for this job.
With no experience on
international surf
travel, I had quite the
task bringing a party of
Cajuns to a festive
destination, as well as
a lively surf scene. |
 |
|
With a
little help from my
bride's mom, Sayulita,
Mexico was chosen for
our adventure. The
small village of
Sayulita, an hour north
of Puerto Vallarta, was
chosen for its old
fashion charm,
incredible food, and fun
surf. |

The
waves, which were what
the groom and I were
only concerned about,
were good enough for the
experienced and gentle
enough for the newbies.
Pictured here is the
groom, Brant, preparing
to get drilled by the
shore break. We
stayed at Papa's
Penthouse and this
picture was taken from
our third floor porch. |
|
|
 |
|
We
graduated from the bunny
hill break, which was in
front of our crib, and
decided to go explore
the coastline a bit.
Surfers will do whatever
it takes to find some
good waves; six adults
in a Sentra and four
boards tied on by twenty
pesos of rope. |
|
|
 |
|
To say
the least, we found a
good spot. The
locals were just as
shocked we found the
place as we were.
We each attempted one
wave and realized we
absolutely did not have
the right equipment for
this wave. In
other words, the wave
about broke our necks. |
|
|
 |
|
The
locals approached us, as
we watched them tango
with their pounding
waves, and asked us not
to tell anyone about
their spot. We
agreed, but I think the
public has the right to
know. Walk away
from the computer and
retrieve a pen and paper
to write these
directions down...Turn
at the four wheel drive
road with no sign, drive
across the small river,
avoid the peacocks,
steer clear of the groms
playing football, not
American football, in
the street, and park in
the dunes. |

When you
see the president's
house, as pictured
above, then you know you
are at the right place.
Oh and did I mention,
leave your common sense
at home because it won't
let you paddle out in
this massive shore
break. |
|
|
 |
|
Exploring
around the next bay is
always on a surfer's
mind. Here we are
using whatever
transportation means
possible to see what
else is out there. |
|
|
 |
|
Once
again we scored.
Real fun, stomach to
head-high rides, and we
were the only ones out
there. There is
truly nothing like
catching choice waves
when it's just you and
your friends. |
|
|
 |
|
Another
six hour day in the
water and back to the
penthouse for a
well-deserved shower and
relaxation. |
|
|
 |
|
At night
we would pound three
course meals and
celebrate another
successful day in
surfer's paradise.
Repeat for for four
consecutive days and
that was our trip. |
|
|
 |
|
I leave
you with this parting
wave of insight.
Try and remember that it
is not the destination
that makes a trip; it is
the friends you travel
with, the people you
meet, the anticipation
of what's around the
corner, and the
experiences you are
given from another
culture. As
always, thank you for
reading. Now go
and see for your self
what is our there! |
