As many
of you know, Aspen has
had an unusually snowy
fall. Some people
even got their first
tracks for the season on
September 23!
After my plans to head
to Boulder were
cancelled due to the
temporary closure of
Vail Pass, I consoled
myself with plans to
ski. On Sunday,
October 22, Brian,
Kristina, and I headed
up to Montezuma Basin on
a bluebird-sky day.
Mark, Heidi, Max, and
Tim quickly caught up to
us and passed us, and we
didn't see them again
until lunch.
Kristina and I were the
only ones of the group
out for our first day,
and it was obvious by
our slowness. |

After
skinning for three
hours, we passed a
couple of parked
snowmobiles that had
passed us just after we
started up the trail.
We happily referred to
the snowmobile riders as
'cheaters.' |

Yes, this
is October 22. |

Brian and
Murray take a break to
admire the views and to
patiently await their
slower companions. |

We
stopped for lunch at the
base of Montezuma Basin.
Unfortunately, we were
too late for the sushi
that Max prepared, but
luckily we were in time
for his chocolate
brownies. |

Brian,
Kristina, and I headed
to the top of this first
pitch, and by then my
legs, as well as
Kristina's, were
shouting "Enough!"
Brian and Murray went on
to catch up with the
rest of the group and to
ski a beautiful
untracked bowl that is
to the left of
Montezuma.
Kristina and I were
thrilled to ski
knee-deep powder; we followed the left-most
tracks in this photo. |

Kristina
is all smiles after the
first turns of the
season! I've been
sad because we missed
out on fall this year in
Aspen, but after a
beautiful day in the
snow, I am ready for
winter and many more
days of powder skiing. |
