Seven of us friends headed up to the Tagert Hut on December 19th and 20th to celebrate the lives of Barney Ferguson and Robbie Wade as well as to get ourselves in the spirit of Christmas.  We left late on Monday in a healthy snow storm, and it continued to snow for the next  24 hours.

After arrival in the gathering darkness, we occupied ourselves with the usual hut antics and were surprised to find the group still awake at nearly 10 pm!  Virtually raucous!

Next morning Dick Jackson dug a serious snow pit (finding a very strong mid-pack under about 30 cm. of new snow), and we set off for Pearl Pass with 50 to 250 feet of visibility.

Suffering from vertigo and mild white-out hallucinations, we topped out on the ridge separating Cooper and Castle Creeks.  That was as far as we were going in the murk.  We had quite a bit of snow (135 cm.) near the hut, but above treeline we bounced off a few rocks on the way down.  Per Murphy's Law, the people with the newest skis suffered the worst dings!  Had a great luge run back to the hut.

A couple of observations: 1) It's shaping up to be a good (quantity) snow year. 2) It's shaping up to be a good (quality) snow year.  Now that's deep.....Cheers, Bob Wade
